Jarvis, Biles Power Beavers To Win

May 6, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Jarvis had a home run among his four hits and Chris Biles added a homer and two doubles for Oregon State in a 13-2 win over Concordia in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Kenny Anderson pitched two-hit ball over 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory.

OSU (20-24 overall, 5-13 Pacific-10) may play at home again Thursday; an announcement as to any game will be made Wednesday. The Beavers have room on their schedule to add a game against another local small college or they could play Portland in the completion of a suspended game and the makeup of a rained-out game from earlier this season.

Oregon State returns to Pacific-10 play on Monday against third-ranked Arizona State at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers play the Sun Devils Monday at 5 p.m., Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Against Concordia (22-27, 11-9 Cascade Collegiate), the Beavers met a club that was playing its third game in two days; the Cavaliers had clinched their conference title with a doubleheader sweep over Oregon Tech on Monday. CU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but OSU went in front for good with a three-run third inning and added two more runs in the fourth.

'It was a good chance for us to come out and play, being down a couple games in the schedule because of rainouts,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, who used 18 position players and four pitchers in the contest. 'It was good for us to play in the middle of the week with us not playing this coming weekend. It was a pretty good ballgame for six innings against a good club, one that's won its conference title.'

Added Jarvis: 'You can have the excuses that it's tough to come out and play on a Tuesday, it's non-conference ... but when it comes down to it, you've got to bring the same game you do against a Southern California or an Arizona State ... it's always nice to play on a day like this when it's not raining, you're not pulling the tarp out - baseball's a fun game to come out and play.'

Jarvis and Biles, both seniors, led the way at the plate, continuing to close in on Oregon State career and single-season records.

Jarvis as 4-for-5 with a homer and 4 runs batted in; only a diving stop by Cavalier first baseman Jarrett Skreen in the fifth inning kept Jarvis from a fifth hit that would have tied the single-game school record. Jarvis is now just two homers, three RBIs and six hits from tying the career records in those categories; he already holds the mark for total bases.

Biles doubled his first two times up to extend his school record for two-base hits in a career; with 23 doubles this season, he's now just one away from tying the school record for doubles in a season. Biles was 3-for-5 with the two doubles, a homer and five RBIs; he moved up a spot into fourth place on the school's list of career hits leaders and jumped from 10th to eighth on the career RBIs list.

Anderson, a sophomore righthander, set career-highs with his 5 1/3 innings and five strikeouts. He evened his record at 3-3, allowing just a pair of runs on two hits and four walks as he combined with relievers Mike Ekstrom, Jared Sanders and Kurt Steele on a five-hitter.

Biles' two-run double to left-centerfield in the bottom of the third inning drove in the tying and go-ahead runs, then he scored on Brad Mellinger's single up the middle. Jarvis' single to center and Biles' slicing double down the leftfield line drove in two more runs in the fourth inning to put OSU up 5-1, and Jacoby Ellsbury drove in another run with a fifth-inning single.

The Beavers broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the seventh inning that included two-run homers lined over the rightfield fence by Jarvis and lofted to right-center by Biles; Chris Kunda also had a run-scoring double off the leftfield fence in the inning. In the eighth, Levi Webber added a run-scoring single through the left side and Kerisi Reynolds drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the final Beaver run.
