Beavers Blank George Fox, 4-0

May 8, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pitcher Jake Postlewait allowed just one hit in seven innings as the Beavers beat George Fox 4-0 in non-league baseball Thursday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Seth Pietsch was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double for OSU (21-24 overall, 5-13 Pacific-10).

The Beavers will host third-ranked Arizona State in a Pacific-10 series next week with games Monday at 5 p.m., Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Postlewait, Ty Kline, Nathan Pendley and Andy Baldwin combined to pitch a two-hitter against George Fox (29-11, 18-5 Northwest), which won the Northwest Conference title and is awaiting word on where it will play in the NCAA Division III Regionals. The Beavers had 12 hits - including two-hit days from Jacoby Ellsbury, Levi Webber and Brad Mellinger - but left nine runners on base.

'Offensively, we didn't execute at all,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'It was fortunate that we got good pitching because we didn't get many runs ... we had 12 hits and we should have put seven or eight runs on the board; instead, we get four and two of those were on home runs.'

Ellsbury started the bottom of the first by lofting a two-ball, two-strike pitch over the rightfield fence. It was the second time in the last four games the freshman has led off the game with a homer, and it was his fourth homer in the last six games.

Pietsch's homer - his 10th of the season - was a solo poke to left-center that made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. OSU added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Ellsbury's run-scoring single and Tony Calderon's sacrifice fly.

That was plenty for Postlewait, who tied his career-highs with seven innings pitched and five strikeouts. The junior lefthander walked three and didn't give up a hit until there were two out in the fifth inning, when Derrick Jones lined a single to rightfield.

Postlewait, who didn't pitch for three weeks in March, has gone at least six innings in each of his last three starts, allowing just two earned runs in that time. After not receiving decisions in strong starts against Southern California and UCLA the past two weeks, Postlewait improved his record to 3-0 this season.

'That's the most pitches I've thrown all season, and my arm feels great,' Postlewait said. 'I was throwing the ball where I wanted and how I wanted.'

Added Casey: 'Jake gave us a great start, then TK (Kline) came in and was good and Baldy (Baldwin) came in and threw well.'

Kline, a senior righthander, allowed the only other Bruin hit - an infield single by Jones to lead off the eighth inning - before recording a pair of strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Baldwin, a freshman righthander, closed the game with a pair of strikeouts.

Senior first baseman Andy Jarvis had a hit, drawing him within five of tying the OSU career record of 231 set by Brian Barden from 2000-02. Jarvis needs two homers to tie the school record of 34 set by Joe Gerber from 1997-2000 and three RBIs to tie Gerber's school record of 169.

Pietsch's seven total bases on the day put him in a tie for 10th on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders at 116, matching Dave Brundage's number from 1986. Chris Kunda extended his career-best hitting streak to nine games for the Beavers.
