Stanford Begins NCAA Tournament Play On Saturday

STANFORD OPENS NCAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY ON THE FARM: The fourth-ranked Stanford men's tennis team (21-3 overall, 7-0 Pacific-10 Conference) begins its quest for an unprecedented 18th NCAA Team Championship this weekend when it hosts first and second round action at the Taube Tennis Center ... The Cardinal opens up its 16th consecutive NCAA appearance against Mid-Continent Conference Champion Oral Roberts (7-15-1, 4-0-1 MCC) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ... In the other first round match on The Farm, 32nd-ranked Arizona State (9-11, 3-3 Pac-10) plays 41st-ranked Fresno State (17-8, 3-1 Western Athletic Conference) at 9:00 a.m. ... Saturday's winners will play on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. for a spot in the third round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday, May 17 at the University of Georgia.
TICKET INFORMATION: Tickets for the NCAA Tennis Tournament can be purchased at the Taube Tennis Center box office beginning on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. ... All-tournament passes, which covers all men's and women's matches during the weekend, are $20 for reserved, $14 for adult general admission and $8 for senior/children/student general admission ... Single day ticket prices are $8 for reserved, $6 for adult general admission and $4 for senior/children/student general admission.
NCAA NOTES: Stanford University has won more NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships than any other school ... The Cardinal has won 17, while USC has captured 16 and UCLA 15 ... No other school has won more than four ... All of Stanford's championships have come since 1973, including four in the 1970's, six in both the 1980's and 1990's and one thus far in the 2000's ... The Cardinal has won five of the last eight national championships, nine of the last 15 and 15 of the last 26 ... Since the NCAA adopted its current dual match format in 1977, Stanford is an amazing 81-9 (.900) in post-season play ... In the last eight years, Stanford is 28-3 (.903) in the NCAA Tournament, including 20 shutout victories ... In its last two championship runs (1998 and 2000), Stanford turned in the most dominant performances in the history of the team championship ... The 1998 squad out-scored its NCAA opposition (Minnesota, UCLA, Mississippi State and Georgia) 16-0, while the 2000 club out-scored its post-season opponents (Northwestern, Auburn, Minnesota, Texas Christian, Florida, Virginia Commonwealth) 24-1.
THE COACH: Stanford head coach Dick Gould has guided the Cardinal to 17 NCAA Team Championships in his 36-plus seasons on The Farm ... He owns a career record of 753-159 (.826), including an amazing 81-9 (.900) mark in NCAA Tournament play ... Gould, who was named ITA/Wilson Intercollegiate Coach of the Decade for both the 1980's and 1990's, has also guided the Cardinal to 14 Pacific-10 Conference Championships and a record 12 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships ... The longtime Cardinal head coach has produced 10 NCAA Singles Champions and six NCAA Doubles Champions, including such notables as John McEnroe, Tim Mayotte, Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan, Jared Palmer and Alex O'Brien.
THE RANKINGS: Stanford currently has five singles players and one doubles team ranked among the nation's best ... Senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK), who was an NCAA Singles Semifinalist last season, is ranked eighth in the nation in singles, and is followed by freshman KC Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) at 49th, sophomore Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) at 63rd, senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) at 77th and freshman James Pade (Woodside, CA) at 114th ... In doubles, Lipsky and Martin are currently ranked fourth.
SERIES STORY: This will be the first-ever meeting between Stanford and Oral Roberts ... The Cardinal is 46-1 against the Sun Devils dating back to 1978, including a 2-0 record this year ... Stanford prevailed 5-2 on March 8 in Tempe and 7-0 on April 11 on The Farm ... Stanford has won all 12 meetings with Fresno State dating back to 1968 ... The Cardinal recorded a 6-1 non-conference home win over the Bulldogs on Feb. 15 of this year.
TEAM NOTES: Stanford has two singles and one doubles entrant in the NCAA Individual Championships on May 21-26 at the University of Georgia ... KC Corkery and David Martin, who is seeded eighth in 64-player draw, were selected in singles and Lipsky and Martin were chosen in doubles ... The Cardinal seniors are the fourth seed in the 32-team doubles draw ... Stanford won its 14th Pac-10 Men's Tennis Team Championship, and sixth in the last seven seasons, in thrilling fashion this year ... The Cardinal went a perfect 7-0 in conference play, including exciting 4-3 wins over both seventh-ranked California and fifth-ranked UCLA ... Against California (April 8 at Stanford), sophomore Sam Warburg broke a 3-3 tie with a dramatic third set comeback against Or Dekel at No. 4 singles ... Warburg trailed 4-1 in the third set but won the final five games to prevail 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and pull out the team victory ... Warburg also broke a 3-3 tie against UCLA (April 18) at with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Chris Lam at No. 4.
