May 8, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State women's golf team is in fifth place after one round at the 2003 NCAA West Regional hosted by Arizona State at the Par 72, 6,256 yard Karsten Golf Course at Tempe, Ariz.
The Cougars were led by Kim Welch who shot a 4-under, and finished day one in a tie for third place. Welch began her day with birdies at the 4th, 5th, 9th, and 10th holes before bogeying the 11th. Welch struck right back though with birdies at 13 and 17, tying her at first at 5-under, before finishing the round with a bogey. Welch sits just one stroke back of Sunny Oh of UNLV and Mikaela Parmlid of USC, who are knotted at first.
Freshman Stephanie Parsley showed veteran form at the Karsten Course Thursday, firing a 2-over 74 for a tie at 26th. Maria Kostina finished the round at 4-over for a tie for 37th, followed by Ashleigh Gilhuly at a tie for 70th, and Jay-Lee Longbottom at 95th.
As a team, the Cougars shot a 297 for the round, missing the all-time scoring mark at 296 for a WSU women's squad set last year at the Regional's held at Stanford, Calif. The Cougars were the only team that began play in the afternoon to finish in the Top 8, which at the end of the tournament will be chosen to go on and compete at the NCAA Championships. USC led all school will a 9-under 279 after day one.
'We played really well today, and Kim is right there in the thick of it,' said Head Coach Walt Williams. 'We look forward to going out there tomorrow and continuing to build.'
The Cougars will tee off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow for the second round of the 2003 NCAA West Regional at Tempe, Ariz.
