Skillman, N.J. - California's #4-ranked doubles tandem of Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones were named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Doubles Team of the Month for April 2003, announced by the ITA Friday, May 9. This is the pair's second such honor in 2003 after receiving the same award for the month of March.
Fusano and Kops-Jones have climbed to #4 in the women's double rankings after completing the month of April with a 9-2 record, while claiming their second consecutive Pac-10 doubles title April 27. For their efforts, the Cal duo was selected to participate in the NCAA Doubles Championships to be played at the conclusion of the team championships at the University of Florida, May 15-24. Fusano and Kops-Jones cruised through April, recording three victories over teams ranked in the Top 50, including two pairs in the Top 20. A come-from-behind 9-8 (7-4) victory over USC's #19 Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson on April 18 clinched the doubles point for the Bears in the squad's 6-1 upset victory over the Trojans.
Cal's No. 1 doubles pair has been instrumental in the team's doubles success this season, compiling a 30-9 overall record with semifinal appearances at the Northwest Regional Championships and National Indoor Championships, plus an invitation to the All-American Championships main draw in October 2002.
