May 9, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked Washington softball team (41-13-1, 8-11 Pac-10) defeated No. 15 Arizona State (30-21, 7-12), 2-, this evening under the lights at Farrington Stadium.
The Huskies jumped on board in the top of the fourth inning on two hits and a Sun Devil error. Kristen Rivera led off the frame with a single through the left side and moved to second on a Kathy Fiske walk. After Rivera was replaced by pinch runner Traci Tawney, Dena Tyson laced a single into left field that Jen Forner misplayed, allowing Tawney to score. ASU intentionally walked Sarah Hyatt to load the bases with no outs but the Huskies could not plate another as Arizona State got out of the inning with a strikeout and a double play.
Washington added to its lead in the fifth with one run on two hits and another Forner error. Amanda Oleson led off with a single to the second baseman and scored on a screeching single by Rivera into left field that got past Forner.
UW ace Tia Bollinger kept the Sun Devils off balance through six innings, allowing no hits and striking out six, including the side in the fifth inning.
The Sun Devils got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Kara Brun high hopper over Oleson at second. Bollinger closed out the game with a pop-up and a line-drive double play to Hyatt at first base to improve to 23-9 on the season.
ASU's Ashley Werschky takes the loss and drops to 9-5.
Washington concludes its Pac-10 schedule with a double header at No. 1 Arizona on Saturday. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
