Bears Split Doubleheader With Beavers
May 10, 2003
CORVALLIS, OR - The No. 9 California softball team split a doubleheader with Oregon State on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at the OSU Softball Complex. The Beavers (32-29; 5-16 Pac-10) recorded a 5-3 upset victory in the first game, while Cal (41-18; 10-11 Pac-10) responded with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Cal took the early lead, picking up an unearned run in the third inning after the Beavers committed a pair of errors in the frame. Vicky Galindo and Kristen Morley each reached base to open the inning against OSU starter Amy Klever. Monica Hoffman entered the game with no outs and runners at second and third and helped the Beavers get out of the inning reasonably unscathed. Hoffman retired three in a row with Cal picking up a run on Haley Woods' infield groundout.
The Beavers answered in the bottom half of the inning, using a pair of hits to tie the score at 1-1 with Kelly Petersen's two-out single to right field plating Adrienne Alo.
A lead-off double in the fourth inning by Vanessa Iapala helped Oregon State jump in front. Senior Steph Adams followed with a single up the middle and Iapala scored after Cal center fielder Kaleo Eldredge bobbled the ball, giving OSU a 2-1 edge.
The Bears regained the lead in the fifth inning when Woods blasted a two-out two-run home run over the center field fence.
It was short-lived however, as Oregon State picked up three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Iapala's two-out single to right field plated Shelly Prochaska to tie the contest and Adams followed with a two-RBI double off the fence in right field, making the score 5-3.
Hoffman picked up her 22nd victory of the season, allowing just three hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Brynnen Guthrie, Kelly Petersen, Iapala, and Adams all had two hits in the contest.
Game 2 saw Cal load the bases in the opening inning and take a 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly by Veronica Nelson. OSU got out of the inning when the Beavers turned their school record tying 24th double play of the season.
Alo's two-out double to deep center field set up Prochaska's bloop RBI single to center, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
It was all Bears after that. California used four hits in the fourth inning to bring three runs across the plate, highlighted by shortstop Chelsea Spencer's first home run of the season with a two-run shot to left field.
Oregon State made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the inning when Iapala tallied an RBI single up the middle that scored Prochaska, but California used a fifth inning lead-off home run by Nelson to push up the Bear advantage.
Cal totaled 12 hits in the contest with Eldredge and Jessica Pamanian each going 3-for-4.
Alo led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 clip from the plate, including her ninth double of the season.
