Bruins Advance to Final 16 with 4-1 Win Over Pepperdine

Los Angeles - The No. 11-seeded UCLA women's tennis team defeated Pepperdine for the third time this season, and earned a trip to Gainesville, FL, to compete in the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The Bruins began their successful afternoon by coming from behind to claim the doubles point. Pepperdine's duo of Natalie Braverman and Karin Schlapbach beat Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild, 8-5, but UCLA won the next two matches to win the point. Laura Gordon and Sara Walker beat Veronica Koksova and Merve Asimgil, 8-5, and Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir beat Monika Horvath and Charlotte Vernaz, 8-6.
Walker put the Bruins up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Braverman. Esseghir followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Asimgil on court three. Pepperdine earned its point when Schlapbach beat Gordon, 7-6(4), 6-0. Wild, however, clinched the Bruins' advance with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Vernaz on court two.
Gregg won the first set 6-3 and led 6-5 in the second set when Wild won her match, and Anya Loncaric led Koksova 6-3, 6-7(3), 3-1 when the match was called.
UCLA will play either Washington or Illinois on Thursday in Florida. Washington and Illinois will play at 1 p.m. Sunday in Seattle to see which team advances. Match times for the NCAA Final 16 will be announced next week.
