Challenge of Atlas and Athena Final Results

Bryan Clay and Robin Unger were the winners of the Challenge of Atlas and Athena, setting new total point meet records at the two-day decathlon and heptathlon competition that concluded Saturday. The University of California hosted the meet at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.

Clay added another win to the three events he won Friday, capturing the discus event with a throw of 161-10. He won the decathlon setting a new total points meet record of 8225. The previous meet record was 8133. Joe Cebulski finished in second place with 7841 points and current volunteer assistant coach Andy Giesler took third place with a point total of 7804. Former Golden Bear and NCAA champion Bevan Hart finished in fifth place (7473) and won both the pole vault (16-0.75) and 1500-meter run (4:32.93) Saturday.

Unger came from behind, to set a new total points meet record and capture the heptathlon title with 5794 points. In Saturday's events, she was victorious in the javelin throw with a toss of 145-7. Gigi Miller and former Cal star and current volunteer assistant coach Missy Vanek finished in second and third places, respectively. Miller won the long jump (19-2.50) and finished with 5747 points, while Vanek won the 800m (2:13.22) and tallied a total of 5667 points.

The Challenge of Atlas and Athena was started by Cal head coach Chris Huffins while he was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. Hosted by California for the first year ever, the multi meet was held for three previous years in Atlanta, Ga.
