Lillibridge Homers Twice In 3-2 Win At UCLA

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Brent Lillibridge belted two solo home runs and Jeff Petersenprovided a solid starting performance Saturday as the Washington baseball team beat UCLA, 3-2,in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Lillibridge, a center fielder from Jackson High in Everett, hit his eighth and ninth homers of theyear and Petersen (5-4), a junior from Kentwood High, held the Bruins to two runs on five hitswhile striking out six in six and one-third innings for the victory.
The win evened the weekend series at one win apiece and improved the UW's record to 34-15overall and 9-8 in the Pac-10, good for sole possession of fourth place. UCLA dropped to 24-27on the year and 8-9 in the conference.
Lillibridge got the game started with a bang, leading off the first inning with a solo homer to left-center. In the third, Lillibridge made it 2-0, belting his ninth home run of the season, another soloshot, to straightaway left.
Washington tacked on a third run in the fourth. Mike Wagner led off with a single and moved tothird on a passed ball. After an out, DH Nick Batkoski reached when UCLA shortstop RyanMcCarthy slipped while planting to throw on a ground ball, advancing Wagner to third.Kyle Larsen's bloop single dropped in center field and Wagner scored to make it 3-0.
Petersen had held the Bruins scoreless on two hits and had retired 11 in a row heading into thebottom of the seventh. Bruins left fielder Chris Jensen, however, belted Petersen's first offering ofthe seventh over the fence in right. Catcher Warren Trott doubled down the left field line, and afteran out, scored on a single down the third-base line from Brandon Averill.
After the Averill single, Husky closer Will Fenton came on relief of Petersen and got twogroundouts to retire the side with the 3-2 lead in tact. Fenton, yet to allow a run in 24 and two-thirds innings this season, picked up his seventh save of the year, throwing two and two-thirdinnings. Fenton allowed two singles and fanned five batters, including three in the ninth.
Bruins starting pitcher Wes Whisler (3-6), who also batted for himself, went the distance in theloss. The sophomore southpaw allowed only five hits and struck out nine.
The Huskies and Bruins go at it again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNWAM-1150.
