Morgan Shoots 68 To Qualify for NCAAs

May 10, 2003

Tempe, AZ - While the 20th ranked Washington women's golf failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time in three years, Husky junior Lindsay Morgan (Walla Walla) will compete as an individual. Morgan equaled her best round as a collegiate by shooting 4-under 68 during the final round of the NCAA West Regional to finish fourth overall and receive one of two at-large berths. The Huskies managed their best single-round score of the 54-hole event, shooting 6-over 294 to move up five spots to 13th.

Southern California, which led the event from the first round, took home the championship by 10 strokes over second-place Oklahoma. The Trojans shot 289 on Saturday for a final score of 870. The Cowgirls shot 290 during the final round to finish as the runners up at 880. Other teams qualifying for the NCAAs from the regional included third-place UCLA (892), Pepperdine (897), Arizona State (902), Ohio State (902), Washington State (904) and Stanford (905).

UNLV's Sunny Oh took medalist honors finishing at 5-under 211. USC's Tanya Dergal and Washington State's Kim Welch tied for second at 3-under 213. Morgan tied USC's Becky Lucidi for fourth at 1-over 217. Oh and Morgan were the two at-large qualifiers for the NCAAs that will be held at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex May 20-23.

Morgan's finish was the second best by a Husky at an NCAA Regional. Dodie Mazzuca finished first at the 1997 regional.

Washington freshman Sung Ea Lee (Tacoma) finished 10th overall at 4-over 220, her best 54-hole score as a collegiate. Lee's finish was the fifth best showing by a Husky at an NCAA regional. It also marked the first time Washington has had top-10 finishers at the same regional.

Husky senior Louise Friberg placed 43rd overall at 14-over 230 after carding a 74 during the final round. Senior Michelle Grafos shot 80 during the final round for a three-day total of 256.

Washington's final round score 6-over 294 was the third best of any team during the final round of play. It was the Huskies second best single-round score of the year.

At the NCAA Central Regional at Lincoln, Neb., Pac-10 Champion California took top honors by 20 strokes over second-place Kent State. The Golden Bears finished the event at 45-over 897. Also qualifying from the region was Texas, Purdue, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Florida and Tulsa.

Duke won the NCAA East Regional title in Winston-Salem with a 54-hole score of 5-over of 857. Georgia and Vanderbilt tied for second at 865. Other teams qualifying from the region were Auburn, Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida State.
