No. 6 Women's Tennis Blanks Southern 4-0 In NCAA First Round Match
May 10, 2003
SEATTLE, Wash. - Sixth-ranked Washington women's tennis (18-3) blanked Southern University (13-13), 4-0, in its NCAA first-round match at Quillian Stadium, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies will face 25th-ranked Illinois (17-7) in tomorrow's regional final at 1 p.m., a rematch of the 2001 NCAA regional final also held in Seattle.
Illinois defeated 30th-ranked UNLV, 4-1, in the first match of the day Saturday, advancing to the regional final for the second time in school history. Two years ago, Washington and Illinois also met in the NCAA second round in Seattle, with the Huskies picking up the 4-0 win. That match remains the only meeting between the two teams.
'I thought this was a great warm-up for tomorrow,' UW head coach Patty McCain said. 'It's one of the advantages of coming in and being the top seed, you get more of a warm-up type match in the first round. The Southern girls are great athletes for sure. Illinois is going to be tough and feisty. They definitely have a lot of spunk in them and I wasn't surprised to see them get through this morning so we're looking forward to tomorrow.'
The Huskies won two doubles contests 8-0 before the third was suspended, and then proceeded to clinch the match with the next three straight-set singles victories. Claire Carter, Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe earned wins at No. 2, 4 and 6, singles respectively. Carter and Darija Klaic earned a victory a No. 1 doubles, while Boisclair and Hoe won at No. 3 doubles.
'We've prepared very well for the tournament,' Carter said. 'It's been a great bonus to have us hosting here so we wanted to get off to a good start. Everyone was fired up and really excited to get going. Everyone played very well today and took care of business, and now we're getting ready for tomorrow.'
With the victory, the Huskies have now won three consecutive NCAA first round matches dating back to 2001.
The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the 16-team NCAA Women's Tennis Championship finals hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, May 15-18.
