Shelton Davis Has Stellar First Day In Pac-10 Decathlon Competition

Los Angeles - USC senior Shelton Davis scored 3,890 points to take second after five events of the 2003 Pac-10 Men's Decathlon Championships held at USC's Katherine B. Loker Stadium.
Davis is 55 points behind freshman Darrion Powell of Washington State (3,945). Santiago Lorenzo of Oregon, who won the conference multi-events competition in 2001, is third at 3,856.
Davis tallied his biggest point totals in the high jump with a mark of 6-3 1/2 (850 points) and in the 400m dash with a time of 49.61 (833 points). His previous best mark after five events was 3,763 and his overall best is 7,236. He was fourth in the decathlon at last year's Pac-10 meet.
USC freshman Jonas Hallgrimsson was scratched from the meet due to illness.
In the women's heptathlon, Washington State's Ellannee Richardson jumped out to the lead with a score of 3,430 points after four events. She's going for her third-straight conference heptathlon title. Her teammate, freshman Diana Pickle, is second at 3,270 points, while Lillian Bush of Stanford is third at 3,226.
Richardson picked up her major points in the 100m hurdles by running 13.68w (1024 points) and in the 200m by running 24.17 (964 points).
The multi-events competition concludes on Sunday at Loker Stadium beginning at noon, as the decathlon will feature the 110m HH, the discus throw, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1500m run, while the heptathlon will include the long jump, javelin throw and 800m run.
The rest of the 2003 Pac-10 Track and Field Championships will be held at Loker Stadium on May 17-18.
