Stanford Rolls Over Oral Roberts, 4-0
May 10, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University men's tennis team opened its quest for an unprecedented 18th NCAA Team Championship with a 4-0 first round victory over visiting Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.
The Cardinal, which has won 17 of its last 18, improved to 22-3 on the season. Oral Roberts, which was making its third consecutive NCAA appearance, concluded its season at 7-16-1.
'Our guys did a very good job today,' Stanford head coach Dick Gould said. 'We knew we were better than Oral Roberts on paper, but going out and playing like it is something else. This was a very solid effort.'
The fourth-ranked and fifth-seeded Cardinal will host 41st-ranked Fresno State (18-8) in second round action on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center. Fresno State advanced with a 4-2 victory over Arizona State on Saturday morning. The winner of Sunday's match moves on the third round on Saturday, May 17 at the University of Georgia.
This will be the second match of the season between the clubs, as the Cardinal recorded a 6-1 home win on Feb. 15.
'Fresno State had a great win today, and showed that they've improved a lot since we played them back in February,' Gould said. 'It will be a great challenge, and we'll have to play our best to beat them tomorrow.'
Stanford had an easy time of it in doubles, as it dropped a combined total of just three games in its two victories. Redshirt junior Carter Morris (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) shut out Kevin Garlington (Huntsville, AL) and Patrick Guilliod (Dallas, TX) 8-0 at No. 3, and freshmen KC Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) and James Pade (Woodside, CA) won seven of the final eight games to defeat Wessel Kemp (Pretoria, South Africa) and Chris Moore (Amarillo, TX) 8-3 at No. 2.
Stanford quickly stretched the lead to 3-0 as senior Scott Lipsky and Morris needed just 34 and 35 minutes, respectively, to post straight set singles victories. Lipsky downed senior Matt Munson (Tulsa, OK) 6-1, 6-0 and Morris blanked Guilliod 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Corkery then wrapped up the Cardinal win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Moore at No. 3.
