Cal Baseball Loses to No. 3 Stanford, 5-4 in 10 Innings.
May 11, 2003
BERKELEY, CA - California reliever Jesse Ingram threw a pick off attempt to first base wildly with two outs in the top of 10th inning, allowing Danny Putnam to score the winning run in a 5-4 Stanford victory over Cal Sunday at Evans Diamond. It was the third frustrating loss for the Bears against the Cardinal as Cal was swept; 9-8, 6-4 and 5-4 in 10 innings. The Bears fell to 27-27 overall and 10-14 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal improved to 35-14 and 16-5 in league play.
Cal had tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run homer by junior third baseman Conor Jackson off of Stanford reliever Ryan McCally. The Bears had a chance to add another run in the eighth with a runner on third with one out, but Stanford's winning pitcher David O'Hagan (2.7 innings, no hits, no runs, no walks, no strikeouts) got James Holder to pop up to third base and Justin Nelson to fly out to center to end the inning.
Cal also had an outstanding chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, senior center fielder Ben Conley was hit by a pitch. David Nicholson then sacrificed Conley to second base and was safe on an error by Cardinal first baseman Brian Hall. Unfortunately for the Bears, junior right fielder Brian Horwitz followed with a line drive out to Hall, who was able to double up Nicholson to end Cal's rally.
Conley and junior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich had two hits apiece for the Bears, while Jackson hit his third homer of the Stanford-Cal series, finishing to three-game set 6-for-13 with a triple, three home runs and eight RBI. Jonny Ash and Brian Hall had two hits apiece for the Cardinal. Stanford had scored a run in the third inning on a RBI double by Ash. Cal took a brief 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Nelson and a RBI single by Conley, before Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Cardinal a 4-2 lead.
Cal will next host San Francisco in the season final, Tuesday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Stanford: Quentin, three-run homer in the fifth inning.
Cal: Jackson, two-run homer in the eighth inning.
