May 11, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Twelfth-ranked and 16th-seeded Washington men's tennis came from behind to edge 29th-ranked San Diego State, 4-3, in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the SDSU Courts in San Diego, Sunday, to advance to the Round of 16 for the third consecutive season. The Huskies will next face top-seeded and undefeated Illinois on May 17 at the NCAA team finals in Athens, Ga.

After San Diego State won the doubles point and held a 2-1 lead, the Huskies rallied to win three of the final four singles matches, capped by senior Dillon Ruby's 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles to clinch the team victory. Washington improved its overall record to 18-5 by winning its third straight match, while the Aztecs finished their season at 16-10.

The Aztecs got on the board first with a win from their second-ranked doubles team of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo as they knocked of the 37th-ranked Husky team of Ari Strasberg and Alex Vlaski, 8-2. UW evened the score when Matt Hanlin and Ruby paired to defeat Daniel Jung and Armando Carrascosa at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. The deciding doubles victory went to SDSU as Felix Hardt and Gabe Coren edged UW's Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler, 8-6.

A 6-0, 6-4 win from Palmanshofer over Jung at No. 4 singles tied the team score at 1-1, only to have San Diego State take a 2-1 lead on Hardt's victory at No. 3 singles over UW's Fred Sundsten. The Huskies then rallied to win three of the next four matches.

Washington used wins from Hanlin and Scharler to take a 3-2 lead, before 10th-ranked Vlaski was upset by 42nd-ranked Maiberger at No. 1 singles. It was just the fourth dual loss of the season for Vlaski. Ruby's win at No. 5 singles proved to be the deciding factor as he took care of Armando Carrascosa, 6-3, 6-3.

The 2003 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships continue with the team finals held May 17-20, followed by the individual singles and doubles competition, May 21-26.
