Sacramento State Takes 15-14 Finale
May 11, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State surrendered 12 hits in a rain-shortened 15-14 seven-inning loss to Sacramento State in non-conference action Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The game was called as WSU came to bat in the bottom of the eighth due to heavy rains and lightning. Garrett Alwert (2-5) took the loss for the Cougars (17-32), tossing 2.1 innings of relief, allowing six hits and six runs. Marshall Plouffe (6-2) surrendered four runs and four hits in four innings of relief to notch the win for the Hornets (31-23).
At the plate, Jay Miller led WSU with a 3-for-4 performance. Justin Hart, Grant Richardson, Derek Bruce and Jonathan Fender had to hits each for the Cougars. Richardson's school-record tying streak of six consecutive games with a home run ended. Three Sacramento State players had two hits each.
WSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Jeremy Farrar walked and followed with a two-base error on a stolen base attempt. He then scored on wild pitch. Following a walk to Miller, Richardson scored him with a double to left center field.
The Hornets responded with seven runs in the top of the second, before the Cougars regained the lead with six runs in their half of the inning.
Fender and Bruce Jacobsen led off with back-to-back singles. Brandon Reddinger then reached on an error that plated Fender. Hart followed with a single up the middle, plating Jacobsen. Miller then singled, scoring Reddinger. Richardson followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Hart. Miller was then thrown out on a steal attempt, but Farrar advanced to third. Bruce followed with a triple to plate Farrar and he scored on a Fender single to right center field.
WSU extended its lead to 10-7 on Farrar's two-run home run, his fifth of the season, which also scored Hart.
Sacramento State added four runs in the top of the fourth, taking an 11-10 lead. The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, taking a 12-11 lead on Brandon Reddinger's single to left field that plated Fender and Robert Stahlke.
The Hornets answered with three runs in the fifth, before WSU added a run in the sixth on Wes Falkenborg's RBI single to left field, which plated Stahlke, cutting the Sacramento State lead to 14-13.
The Hornets added a run in the seventh and again, the Cougars matched it with a score of their own, when Bruce's two-out single up the middle scored Miller.
The Cougars shutdown Sacramento State in the top of the eighth, but play was halted and the inning was wiped of the scorebook.
WSU will face Lewis-Clark State in non-conference action Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Harris Field. The Cougars return to Pacific-10 Conference action Friday at 6 p.m. against USC at Dedeaux Field.
