Beavers Lose Series Opener 14-4 To No. 3 Arizona State

May 12, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Kunda pushed his hitting streak to 10 games as Oregon State built an early three-run lead, but third-ranked Arizona State came back for a 14-4 win in Pacific-10 baseball Monday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Aaron Mathews was 3-for-3 for the Beavers, while Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-for-4 with a triple.

OSU (21-26 overall, 5-14 Pac-10) and ASU (45-9, 11-5) continue their series Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

On Monday, Oregon State jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Brad Mellinger and Ellsbury singled home runs in the inning and an ASU error helped the Beavers to another run.

The Sun Devils evened the score with a three-run third, though. All three runs scored with two out as Jeremy West hit a run-scoring double and Travis Buck followed with a two-run homer to right-centerfield off Beaver righthander Ben Rowe.

Arizona State took the lead with three more runs in the fourth on Dustin Pedroia's run-scoring double and Andre Ethier's two-run single. OSU narrowed the gap to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Ellsbury tripled to right-center and eventually scored on Andy Jarvis' single into short centerfield.

Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to seven games; during that time, he's homered four times. After dropping as low as .278 in late April, his batting average is back up to .303 after Monday's game.

'I knew I could do that,' the freshman outfielder said of his recent power surge. 'I did it in high school - it was just a matter of time before it came around again ... my personal goal was to hit .300-plus; when I slumped, I knew I had to change something, I had to make an adjustment.'

The Beavers were still within 8-4 going into the eighth inning, but the Sun Devils scored twice in the eighth and four more times in the ninth to wrap up the win. OSU was outhit by just a 13-11 margin, but left 13 runners on base.

'We made some mistakes, hitting-wise,' Ellsbury said. 'We only had about two less hits ... we should have scored more runs with those hits.'

Kunda extended his hitting streak with a double down the rightfield line in the first inning. During his streak, he's batting .326 with two homers, six doubles and six runs batted in.

Andy Jarvis drew closer to OSU's career records for hits and RBIs with his run-scoring single. Jarvis needs four hits to tie the record of 231 set by Brian Barden from 2000-02, and he needs two RBIs to tie the record set by Joe Gerber from 1997-2000.
