Pac-10 Notes: Sitting atop the Conference is STANFORD (16-5, 35-14) who notched four wins last week, including a non-conference battle with San Jose State and a series sweep of CALIFORNIA (10-14, 27-27) in Berkeley ... The Cardinal will face-off with UCLA (8-10, 24-28) beginning Fri., May 16, while the Golden Bears play in their final regular season game of the 2003 season against San Francisco on Tues., May 13 ... ARIZONA (11-7, 33-17) has been idle for over a week, but will return to action Sat., May 17 when they take on OREGON STATE (5-13, 21-24) in Tucson, Ariz. ... The Beavers have a busy week as they are at ARIZONA STATE (10-5, 44-9) beginning Mon., May 12 for a three-game Pac-10 series before they take on UA ... ASU also has a quick turnaround as they travel to Seattle for games against WASHINGTON (10-8, 35-15) beginning Sat., May 17 ... After picking up two wins over Sacramento State last weekend, WASHINGTON STATE (5-13, 17-32) heads south to face off with USC (9-9, 25-23) ... The Cougars and Trojans have mid-week games against Lewis-Clark State and Loyola Marymount, respectively.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD junior third baseman Jonny Ash has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and UCLA junior right-hander Casey Janssen has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for May 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Ash, from Oakland, Calif., hit .545 (6-for-11) with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple and two RBI to lead Stanford to a three-game sweep at California, extending the Cardinal road win streak to 14 games. Ash also posted a .909 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage in addition to fielding all five of his chances at third base.
Janssen, from Fountain Valley, Calif., struck out 11 batters in 7.0 innings on Fri., May 9 to help the Bruins to a 5-4 win over Washington, notching his fifth win on the season. He gave up only one walk, two runs (one earned) on five hits in his appearance. Janssen leads the team with 67 strikeouts, good enough to rank fourth in the Pac-10.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Ash in his career and the 53rd selection all-time for Stanford. The Pitcher of the Week is the first such honor for Janssen, the 34th Bruin to earn the weekly recognition.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Conor Jackson, CAL; Brent Lillibridge, WASH; Jay Miller, WSU. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Matt Manship, STAN; Clay Johnson, WASH.

Arizona was idle last week but still managed to gain four spots in Baseball America's latest poll, jumping from No. 22 to No. 18 ... The Wildcats are also ranked 17th and 20th by Collegiate Baseball and Sports Weekly/ESPN, respectively ... UA sits alone in third place in the Pac-10 with a 33-17 overall record, two games better than its 31-24 2002 overall record ... Arizona will host Oregon State in its final regular season series at Frank Sancet Field beginning Sat., May 17 ... With 45 triples hit thus far in 2003, the Wildcats have broken their own Conference record of 43 set by the 1986 squad ... Sophomore outfielder Jeff Van Houten continues to have a standout season, recording a .403 batting average, good enough to rank second in the Conference, along with 64 RBI, third in the Pac-10.
ARIZONA STATE (10-5, 44-9)Last Week: vs. UC Irvine W, 11-1This Week: *Oregon State, *Washington
Arizona State took on UC Irvine last week in its final non-conference game of the season and defeated the Anteaters, 11-1 ... The Sun Devils have a hefty week in front of them as they play the next six games on the road, including contests against Oregon State and Washington ... ASU is in second place in the Conference with a 10-5 league record ... The Devils remain a consensus Top-10 team, ranked as high as No. 3 by Sports Weekly/ESPN ... ASU leads the Conference in batting average with a .351 mark and its no wonder they are in first place in nine other categories, including runs scored, doubles, total bases, walks, hits, total plate appearances, at bats, RBI and sacrifice flies ... Sophomore Jeff Larish has had a terrific year, leading the league in RBI (79) and ranking second in on-base percentage (.536).

California secured a 4-2 win over Fresno State last week, but went on to drop a close Pac-10 series against first-place Stanford ... The Golden Bears lost three games by a combined four runs, the final of which was a 5-4 decision in 10 innings ... Cal plays its final regular season game of the 2003 season against San Francisco on Tues., May 13 ... Junior third baseman Conor Jackson had a stellar series against the Cardinal going 6-for-13 (.462) with a triple, three home runs and eight RBI ... Jackson finds himself ranked in six Pac-10 categories, including batting average (.394, 4th), runs scored (53, 8th), slugging percentage (.690, 7th), walks (49, 2nd), sacrifice flies (5, t6th) and on base percentage (.546, 1st) ... California is third in the Conference in Pac-10 only batting average at .293.

Oregon State took two wins last week over Concordia and George Fox bringing its overall record to 21-24 on the season ... The Beavers have a busy week ahead of them as they will take on Arizona State in Corvallis beginning Mon., May 12 and will head to Tucson to face Arizona in a three-game series on Sat., May 17 ... OSU ranks fourth in the Pac-10 with a .307 batting average through 45 games played ... One of the teams' hot hitters continues to be Tony Calderon who owns a .381 average ... Calderon also has 20 doubles and a .471 on-base percentage, both of which place him at fourth and eighth in the Pac-10, respectively ... Junior right-hander Ben Rowe leads the team with 32 strikeouts ... Rowe has a 5.88 ERA in 12 appearances, while opponents are only hitting .279 off of him.

Stanford has won seven games in a row and is carrying a lot of momentum into the final portion of the regular season ... The Cardinal sits alone in first place and has a magic number of three for at least a share of the Pac-10 title ... Stanford's final seven games are all at home as they will take on Saint Mary's in a mid-week game before hosting UCLA at Sunken Diamond on Fri., May 16 ... Third baseman Jonny Ash was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for his 6-for-11 (.545), two double, a triple and two RBI performance last weekend against California ... Junior right-hander John Hudgins has been one of the many reasons the Cardinal has done so well this season ... Hudgins leads the Conference in innings pitched (108.1), strikeouts (98) and games started (15), while also ranking fifth in ERA (3.49).

UCLA picked up two wins last week over UC Santa Barbara and the first of a three-game series against Washington ... The Bruins moved ahead of California in the Pac-10 standings to take sole possession of sixth place ... The team has a mid-week contest against Pepperdine before taking on first-place Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. ... UCLA's final seven games are on the road as they will head to Pullman the following week to face WSU in its last Pac-10 series of 2003 ... Junior right-hander Casey Janssen was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Fri., May 9 in which he struck out 11 batters over 7.0 innings, helping UCLA to a 5-4 win over UW ... Janssen has notched 67 strikeouts on the year, good enough to rank fourth in the Pac-10.

USC faced No. 4 Cal State Fullerton last week at Edison International Field, home of the world champion Anaheim Angels ... Unfortunately, the Rally Monkey was not in attendance and the Trojans fell, 8-2 ... USC will host Loyola Marymount and Washington State at Dedeaux Field this week ... Freshman Jeff Clement was one of six Pac-10 players invited to the USA Baseball National Team tryouts ... Senior shortstop Anthony Lunetta leads the team with a .337 batting average, while also pacing the team in hits with 62 ... Sophomore right-hander Bret Butler is second in the Conference with 16 games finished and first in the league with 28 games in relief ... Butler has a 4.11 ERA through 46 innings pitched, 47 strikeouts and 15 walks.

The Huskies, winners of eight of their last 10 games, picked up four more victories last week against Portland and Conference foe, UCLA ... Washington sits in fourth place with six regular season games left, all at home ... UW has a three-game series with Arizona State beginning Sat., May 11 at Husky Ballpark ... Junior transfer Chad Boudon tied the UW single-season home run record on Tues., May 6 when he blasted his 19th homer on the year ... Boudon leads the Pac-10 in home runs and is fifth in slugging percentage (.702) ... Sophomore righty Will Fenton is having a sensational year, having picked up his seventh save last week against the Bruins ... Fenton's numbers include 24.2 innings pitched, 11 hits, 0.00 ERA, 10 walks and 39 strikeouts ... Washington is ranked third in the nation in fielding percentage (. 981).

Washington State notched two wins over Sacramento State last week by scores of 17-11 and 14-5 ... Sunday's game was shortened due to rain and the Cougars fell by one run ... WSU takes to the road this week for contests against Lewis-Clark State and USC ... Tuesday's game will mark the third time this season that LCS and the Cougs have met up, WSU having won the last meeting, 3-1 ... Freshman outfielder Jay Miller had a fantastic weekend against the Hornets going 9-for-15 (.600), scoring a team-high six runs, along with hitting three doubles and one home run ... Sophomore infielder Derek Bruce also had an identical 9-for-15 (.600) weekend at the plate ... Bruce scored five runs, hit two doubles, two triples and drove home six runs ... He also added two stolen bases and 15 total bases for the series.
