Ninth-Inning Rally Lifts Bruins to 4-3 Win Over Pepperdine
May 13, 2003
Sean Carpenter scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to give UCLA (25-28) a 4-3 win over Pepperdine (34-19) on Tuesday afternoon.
Ryan McCarthy got the ninth frame started with a lead-off walk, before Brandon Averill followed with a single. Adam Simon followed with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Preston Griffin would bring McCarthy home. After a strikeout, Billy Susdorf extended the inning with another walk. Carpenter would prove to be the game-winning run as he scored on a wild pitch from Steve Kleen.
Bruin reliever Doug Silva earned his third save of the season as he kept the Waves from tying the game in the bottom of the frame.
Starter Hector Ambriz would keep the Waves at bay until the fourth inning. A lead-off home run from designated hitter Ty Harper started the rally before two more Wave runs would score.
Averill brought the Pepperdine lead down to one run with his eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth. After six innings, UCLA trailed 3-2.
Reliever Mike Castillo retired nine straight batters in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to keep the Bruins in striking distance. His brilliant performance would give the right-hander his first win of the season in his first decision.
The Bruins will return to Pac-10 action this weekend when they head to first-place Stanford. Friday night's game is set for 6:00 pm.
