Pac-10 Announces Softball All-Conference Awards

UCLA shortstop Natasha Watley was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, while Bruin hurler Keira Goerl was named Pitcher of the Year. Newcomer of the Year honors went to ARIZONA pitcher Alicia Hollowell, and Coach of the Year was awarded to Wildcat head coach Mike Candrea, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Watley, a senior from Irvine, Calif., is currently second in the nation with a .503 batting average. She leads the Pac-10 in batting average, hits (87) and stolen bases (31). This season she swiped the Pac-10 career stolen base record, bringing her career mark to 154. She was named Pac-10 Player of the Week once, and swept national weekly awards from ESPN.com/USA Softball and Louisville Slugger/NFCA on March 11. She is one of the three remaining finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.

Goerl, a junior from Moreno Valley, Calif., helped lead the Bruins to their fifth consecutive 40-win season. She has a 31-6 record with a Conference-best 0.70 ERA. She has compiled 279 strikeouts and held opponents to a Pac-10- low .124 batting average. Goerl ranks in the top-five in the nation in ERA and victories. She has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on three occasions, and was named ESPN.com/USA Softball Player of the Week on April 1. The hurler tossed 13 one-hit games this year, including a no-hitter on March 28 against STANFORD. She was one of the final ten candidates for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year trophy.

Hollowell, a freshman from Suisun, Calif., has had one of the best freshman campaigns in Arizona history, helping the 'Cats hold on to a number one ranking for the last six weeks. She currently leads the Pac-10 in strikeouts (326), a mark which set a UA freshman record. Hollowell tossed three no-hitters in her first year as a Wildcat, and had 11 double-digit strikeout performances. She is the winningest Pac-10 pitcher this season, topping the Conference witha 34-3 ledger. She has earned the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor five times this season, and won botht he ESPN.com/USA Softball and Louisville Slugger/NFCA national weekly honors on April 8.

Candrea, in his 18th year at Arizona, earns his eighth Pac-10 Coach of the Year award after guiding the No. 1-ranked Wildcats to a seventh Pac-10 title and a number one seed in Arizona's 17th consecutive postseason appearance. This year, Arizona posted a 50-5 regular season record, marking the tenth consecutive 50+ win season for Candrea and the 'Cats.
