BERKELEY - On the eve of their 18th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the California softball team learned that five of its players were selected to the All-Pacific Region team, it was announced Wednesday.
Veronica Nelson (first base) was the only Golden Bear named to the first team while Courtney Scott (catcher), Vicky Galindo (third base), Kaleo Eldredge (outfield) and Lindsay James (outfield) earned second-team accolades.
Nelson (Oakland, Calif.) leads Cal this season with a .365 batting average to go along with 11 home runs and a .708 slugging percentage. She is the NCAA all-time leader in walks with 377 and also tops the school record books in RBI with 164. She was one of 25 finalists for national player of the year. This is Nelson's second first-team selection as she was also named in 2001.
Scott (Clovis, Calif.) is hitting .308 on the year and leads the team with 37 RBI and 12 doubles. She also boasts a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Named to the initial list of 40 national player of the year candidates, Scott ranks among the top six in seven career statistical categories at Cal.
Galindo (Union City, Calif.), in her first year at Cal after transferring from West Valley J.C., leads the team with 61 hits and is the third leading batter with a .324 average. She also paces the club with 36 runs, 19 multi-hit games, four triples and 16 stolen bases.
Eldredge (Kahului, Hawaii), also a second-team all-region pick last year, is hitting .304 and has just six strikeouts in 150 plate appearances. She is third on the team with 27 RBI.
James (San Carlos, Calif.) is second on the team among regular players with a .327 batting average and a .401 on-base percentage. She also ranks second in hits with 56 and runs scored with 35.
Cal had just three all-region nods during last year's title run.
The Bears (41-18) are in Ann Arbor, Michigan and begin defense of their national championship Thursday when they face Oakland (Mich.) in regional play.
