Rough Eighth Inning Dooms Beavers

May 14, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's chance to win a series from the nation's third-ranked team disappeared when Arizona State scored eight runs in the eighth inning to take a 12-7 win in Pacifc-10 baseball Wednesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers took a 6-3 lead into the inning, but ASU collected six hits and used four walks in the eighth to rally for the win.

OSU (22-26 overall, 6-15 Pac-10) now goes to Arizona to close out the conference season with a series Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 7 p.m. and Monday at 12 noon; all three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240). The Beavers then return home to play Portland on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the completion of a suspended game plus the makeup of a rained-out game; that will end OSU's season, as a final non-conference series at Gonzaga that had been scheduled for May 23-25 has been cancelled.

As the Beavers near the end of what's been a challenging season, they've managed to concentrate on the improvement they've made rather as the year goes on rather than the close-but-no-cigar games.

'We came out and played good baseball for most of this series,' said OSU catcher Paul Richie, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in on Wednesday. 'We've just got to come out to practice Thursday, focus on what we're doing, and take the same intensity down to Arizona.'

Wednesday against Arizona State (46-10, 12-6), OSU honored seniors Chris Biles, Noel Clark, Stephen Copeland, Andy Jarvis, Ty Kline and Ian McMullen prior to their last Pac-10 home game. The Beavers nearly celebrated with a win over a top-five team for the third straight season as Copeland allowed the potent ASU lineup just three runs in 5 1/3 innings, then relievers Clark, Jon Koller and Kenny Anderson got OSU into the eighth inning with a 6-3 lead.

But the Sun Devils used six straight one-out hits to take the lead, going in front 7-6 on Steve Garrabrants two-run double off Ty Kline and then getting a two-run homer from Tuffy Gosewisch off Andy Baldwin to make it 9-6.

'Stephen came out and had his pitches working,' Richie said. 'He kept them off-balance and did a good job. In the eighth inning, it was a lot of things - not throwing pitches for strikes, I didn't block some balls that I should have, we had a couple cross-ups ...

'That's the way it's been for us this year. When things don't go well, they really don't go well.'

The Beavers had trailed 3-0 in the middle of the second inning before staging their own comeback. In the bottom of the second, Richie singled home one run and Brad Mellinger squeezed home another to make it 3-2. An inning later, Chris Kunda led off with his fifth homer of the year and Aaron Mathews and Richie added run-scoring singles to give OSU a 5-3 lead.

The Beavers tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-3 when Kunda drew a bases-loaded walk from ASU closer Ryan Schroyer. OSU still had the bases loaded with one out, but Schroyer got Jarvis to bounce into an inning-ending double play and keep the lead at three runs.

Jarvis' hit left him two shy of Oregon State's career record of 231, set by Brian Barden from 2000-02; he also remained one RBI shy of matching Joe Gerber's record of 169 set from 1997-2000. The hit also gave Jarvis a 10-game hitting streak, matching his longest of the season.

Ellsbury was 2-for-5 and led off the ninth inning with a homer to right-center for OSU. It was the freshman outfielder's sixth homer of the year and his fifth in the last nine games; his current hitting streak stands at nine games.
