Softball Downs Creighton, 5-1, In NCAA Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 1-seed Washington softball team (43-14-1) defeated No. 8 Creighton (25-23), 5-1, this afternoon at Bolwin Stadium to open the NCAA Regional Tournament.
The Huskies took an early lead in the first inning with a two-run home run by Kristen Rivera over the right field wall. The homer was the 22nd for Rivera this season and scored Amanda Oleson who had reached base on a walk.
Washington pushed its lead to four runs in the second inning on two hits. Dena Tyson and Sarah Hyatt led off the frame with back-to-back walks and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Aimee Minor. Designated player Courtney Jeffries then singled up the middle to score Tyson. With two outs, Rita Roach singled into left field to score Hyatt and give UW the 4-0 advantage.
Creighton put a run on the board in the third with a solo home run by Abby Johnson over the left field fence.
UW answered in the third when Kathy Fiske belted her 10th home run of the season over the left field wall to make the score 5-1.
Ashley Boek (18-4) picked up the win as she scattered four hits over five innings with five strikeouts. Tia Bollinger earned her sixth save of the season as she allowed no hits and struck out two. Tammy Nielsen (19-6) suffered the loss for Creighton as she gave up five runs over 2.1 innings.
The Huskies advance to the second round versus No. 4 seed Mississippi State on Friday at 10:30 a.m. (PT). The Bulldogs defeated No. 5 seed Florida International earlier this morning, 4-2.
