STANFORD TRAVELS TO GEORGIA FOR NCAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: The Stanford University men's tennis team has advanced to the 'Sweet 16' of the NCAA Team Championship for the 15th time in the last 16 years, and will take on Tulane in third round action on Saturday, May 17 at the University of Georgia ... The fifth-seeded Cardinal (23-3) will take on the 12th-seeded Green Wave (19-5) at 6:00 p.m. (ET)/3:00 p.m. (PT) at the McWhorter Courts ... The winner of that match will play fourth-seeded California (21-4) or No. 17-32 seed Ohio State (22-6) in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (ET)/12:00 p.m. (PT) ... The team championship will continue through Tuesday in Athens, and will be followed on the same site by the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on May 21-26 ... The Cardinal has won 13 of its 17 NCAA Team Championships in Athens, with the last one coming in 2000 ... Stanford advanced to third round of the 2003 team championship with a pair of convincing home wins on May 10-11 at the Taube Tennis Center ... The Cardinal defeated Oral Roberts 4-0 in the first round and Fresno State 4-0 in the second round, marking the 12th straight year that Stanford has recorded at least one shutout in post-season play.

NCAA NOTES: Stanford University has won more NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships than any other school ... The Cardinal has won 17, while USC has captured 16 and UCLA 15 ... No other school has won more than four ... All of Stanford's championships have come since 1973, including four in the 1970's, six in both the 1980's and 1990's and one thus far in the 2000's ... The Cardinal has won five of the last eight national championships, nine of the last 15 and 15 of the last 26 ... Since the NCAA adopted its current dual match format in 1977, Stanford is an amazing 83-9 (.902) in post-season play ... In the last eight years, Stanford is 30-3 (.909) in the NCAA Tournament, including 22 shutout victories ... In its last two championship runs (1998 and 2000), Stanford turned in the most dominant performances in the history of the team championship ... The 1998 squad out-scored its NCAA opposition (Minnesota, UCLA, Mississippi State and Georgia) 16-0, while the 2000 club out-scored its post-season opponents (Northwestern, Auburn, Minnesota, Texas Christian, Florida, Virginia Commonwealth) 24-1.

THE COACH: Stanford head coach Dick Gould has guided the Cardinal to 17 NCAA Team Championships in 37 seasons on The Farm ... He owns a career record of 755-139 (.845), including an amazing 83-9 (.902) mark in NCAA Tournament play ... Gould, who was named ITA/Wilson Intercollegiate Coach of the Decade for both the 1980's and 1990's, has also guided the Cardinal to 14 Pacific-10 Conference Championships and a record 12 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships ... Gould was also named the 2003 Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year and Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year ... The Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor was the ninth of Gould's career ... The longtime Cardinal head coach has produced 10 NCAA Singles Champions and six NCAA Doubles Champions, including such notables as John McEnroe, Tim Mayotte, Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan, Jared Palmer and Alex O'Brien.

THE RANKINGS: Stanford currently has five singles players and one doubles team ranked among the nation's best ... Senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK), who was an NCAA Singles Semifinalist last season, is ranked eighth in the nation in singles, and is followed by freshman KC Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) at 49th, sophomore Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) at 63rd, senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) at 77th and freshman James Pade (Woodside, CA) at 114th ... In doubles, Lipsky and Martin are currently ranked fourth.

SERIES STORY: The only previous meeting between Stanford and Tulane occurred on March 5 of this season on The Farm ... In that match, the Cardinal rolled to a 7-0 victory, including five straight set singles wins ... The match was a last-minute schedule replacement for the Cardinal after the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, which was scheduled for Jan. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nevada, was cancelled because of the withdrawal of the event's sponsor ... Stanford is 73-11 against California dating back to 1967 ... The teams split the 2002-03 regular season series, with each squad winning 4-3 on its home court (Feb. 1 at California; April 8 at Stanford) ... The Cardinal is 1-0 against Ohio State, including a 9-0 win on March 23, 1988 at Stanford.

TEAM NOTES: Stanford has two singles and one doubles entrant in the NCAA Individual Championships on May 21-26 at the University of Georgia ... KC Corkery and David Martin, who is seeded eighth in 64-player draw, were selected in singles and Scott Lipsky and Martin were chosen in doubles ... The Cardinal seniors are the fourth seed in the 32-team doubles draw ... Stanford won its 14th Pac-10 Men's Tennis Team Championship, and sixth in the last seven seasons, in thrilling fashion this year ... The Cardinal went a perfect 7-0 in conference play, including exciting 4-3 wins over both seventh-ranked California and fifth-ranked UCLA ... Stanford's Dick Gould was named 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, while Lipsky and Martin were named Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year and Corkery was selected as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
