Cal In 19th After Second Round of NCAA West Regional

AUBURN, Wash. - The California men's golf team dropped from 12th after the first round to 19th after the second round of the NCAA West Regional Friday at Washington National Golf Course.
UCLA shot a minus-eight 280 in the second round for a two-round score of minus-five 571. The Bruins are nine shots ahead of Pac-10 rival Arizona (580) and three ahead of New Mexico (583). The Top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 27-30 in Stillwater, Okla. The other teams in line to advance are UNLV (585), Georgia (586), Arizona State (587), Oregon (590), USC (593), UC Irvine (593), Washington (594) and San Diego State (594).
Peter Tomasulo leads the Golden Bears in a tie for 30th at 147 after standing in a tie for eighth after the opening round with an even-par 72. Jeff Hood is the next best Cal golfer in a tie for 65th at 151.
New Mexico's Michael Letzig leads the individual race with a minus-seven 137, two shots ahead of Arizona's Chris Nallen and five ahead of three golfers, who are tied for third. UCLA has three golfers in the top six. The Bruins' John Merrick, who is tied for third shot a 67 in the second round for a new course record.
The third and final round tees off Saturday at 7:12 a.m.
