May 16, 2003
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior hurler Monica Hoffman tallied a season-high nine strikeouts and freshman Vanessa Iapala drove in a pair of runs to lead No. 6 seeded Oregon State to a 2-1 upset victory against No. 10 ranked Florida State on Friday morning in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
The Beavers (33-30) scored early and held onto the lead against the Seminoles (46-11), setting up a 5:30 p.m. PDT contest against the loser of No. 4 ranked Oklahoma and No. 19 South Florida in the 10th game of the tournament in Gainesville, FL.
Iapala's two-out two-RBI single up the middle gave Oregon State a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. The Beavers got infield hits from Clare Burnum and Shelly Prochaska in the frame, with Brynnen Guthrie, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Prochaska crossing the plate.
With her run scored, Prochaska became the first player in Oregon State history to record 200 hits, 100 RBI and 100 runs scored in her career.
Hoffman had a trio of strikeouts in the first inning against the potent FSU line-up and after the Seminoles put a pair of runners on base with two-down in the second, she caught Natasha Jacob looking to end the frame.
The junior hurler was in control of the contest from the start, striking out a season-high nine batters over the first five innings. Unfortunately the Beaver defense faltered and a fourth inning OSU error proved costly, as the Seminoles got one run back when Elisa Vasquez, who reached on a lead-off error, crossed the plate on a two-out hit by Lesley Palmer. Palmer's shot to right field was the first out of the infield for FSU in the contest.
Florida State ace Casey Hunter (27-6) settled in after being roughed up in the first inning, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters she faced.
FSU put the leadoff runner on base in the top of the fifth inning after an infield hit, but Hoffman struck out a pair of batters including Brandi Stuart on a changeup to end the frame.Hoffman continued to breeze through the Seminole batters but was drilled in the left shin by a lined shot from Shundra Colzie ending the sixth inning.
Oregon State gave Hoffman a bit of a rest in the bottom half of the frame but stranded a trio of runners on base, unable to get any more runs on the board.
Returning to the field to close out the contest, Hoffman retired three straight to earn her 23rd victory of the season.
Both teams had four hits in the contest, with Burnum finishing a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate to lead the Beavers.
