The University of California men's and women's track and field teams stand in eighth and ninth place, respectively at the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships held Saturday-Sunday, May 17-18 at USC's Katherine B. Locker Stadium in Los Angeles.
Stanford women's squad leads the field at the conference meet with 65 points. Cal's women's team has nine points. On the men's side, Oregon leads after Saturday's events with 59 points, while the Golden Bears' men's team has 16 points. The meet is scored as 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for places one through eight. Several field events were contested Saturday, while the track events were all preliminary, except for the 3000-meter steeplechase and 10,000m run.
Redshirt freshman Elzunia Lamb has scored four points for the Bears. Last weekend, she finished sixth at the Pac-10 Multi-Meet to earn three points and on Saturday she finished eighth in the long jump (19-3.25) to tack on another point. Sophomore Abby Parker was the other Bear to score points for Cal's women's team. Parker finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase (10:49.20) to add four points. Parker's time was her season-best and is the second-fastest all-time in Cal's history.
Other impressive performances included freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe's fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles (1:00.58). Junior Stephanie Cowling and senior April Holliverse also clocked in top eight finishes in the 400m hurdles and will compete in the finals tomorrow. Freshman Bridget Duffy placed seventh in the 1500m run (4:29.47) to earn a spot in the finals.
Cal's men's squad earned 16 points from its finishes in the shot put and javelin events. Sophomore Rhuben Williams placed third in the shot with a personal-best throw of 61-8.25. That toss ranks fourth on the Bears' all-time best performances list. Junior Amin Nikfar finished in fourth-place with a shot of 60-3.25. That is his personal-best, as well, and ranks sixth on Cal's all-time list. In the javelin throw, senior Joe Berro notched a fourth-place finish with his throw of 207-4.
In the track prelims, juniors Tim Bogdanof and Bruce Giron and sophomores Ricci Dula and Toby Atawo earned top eight finishes that will allow them to compete in Sunday's finals.
