Jarvis Sets Career RBI Record

May 17, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Andy Jarvis set Oregon State's career record for runs batted in on Saturday night but the Beavers fell to 20th-ranked Arizona 20-6 in Pacific-10 baseball at Sancet Field. OSU (22-27 overall, 6-16 Pac-10) was within 6-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Wildcats (34-17, 12-7) scored three runs and then UA added four in the sixth to break the game open.

The teams continue their series Sunday at 7 p.m. and conclude it Monday at 12 noon. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Jarvis, a senior first baseman, drove in the 169th and 170th runs of his career despite having his 10-game hitting streak snapped. Jarvis had a sacrifice fly in the third inning to tie the record set by Joe Gerber from 1997-2000; he broke the record with a run-scoring groundout in the fifth inning.

Jarvis remains two hits and two home runs away from tying the OSU career records in those categories.

Freshman outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a first-inning single to right; it was the third straight game in which Ellsbury has led off the OSU first with a hit. He finished the night 3-for-5 with a double, making it the fifth straight game in which he's had at least two hits. During his hitting streak, Ellsbury is batting .463.

Arizona took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and then made it 4-0 with two more runs in the second. The Beavers drew within 4-3 in the third on Jarvis' sacrifice fly, Chris Biles' run-scoring single and Tony Calderon's run-scoring double.

After two more Wildcat runs in the fourth, OSU cut the gap to 6-4 when Ellsbury doubled and scored on Jarvis' groundout in the fifth. The Wildcats scored three times in the bottom of the inning off OSU junior righthander Ben Rowe, though, and tacked on four more runs against Rowe and reliever Jon Koller in the sixth to make the score 13-4.
