No. 6 Seeded Softball Rolls Past Florida Atlantic, 7-3, To Reach NCAA Regional Semi-Final Game
May 17, 2003
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Oregon State's softball squad combined great pitching and potent hitting to knock off Florida Atlantic University, 7-3, in Saturday's afternoon action at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Gainesville, FL.
With the victory, the Beavers (35-30) advance to the semi-final game of the tournament and will face either No. 4 ranked Oklahoma or No. 7 seed Texas-Arlington at 3 p.m. PDT for a chance to play in Sunday's championship contest.
OSU is now 3-1 in the tournament, having played four of the five teams in the Region from the Sunshine State.
Oregon State jumped in front of Florida Atlantic (44-28) when Vanessa Iapala singled and senior Steph Adams blasted a two-out two-run shot over the centerfield wall, making the score 2-0 in the second. The home run was the 24th of Adams' career - second most in school history.
Even with a bad leg and shoulder, OSU hurler Monica Hoffman held the Owls without a hit until FAU roped together two consecutive singles to open the bottom of the fifth inning. A Beaver fielding error during the frame proved costly as Florida Atlantic loaded the bases and scored a pair of unearned runs when Pam Mazzarella belted a two-out double to right field. Hoffman picked up her fourth K of the contest when she caught Jenn Piazza looking to end the inning but FAU narrowed the margin to 3-2.
Oregon State responded in a big way in the top of the sixth inning, adding three runs and pushing the lead to 6-2. Singles from Iapala and Adams set-up a two-run triple to the gap in right-center field by freshman Lisa Allen. Allen proceeded to score on the play after an errant throw went into the FAU dugout.
Beaver freshman pitcher Amy Klever entered the game in relief in the bottom of the sixth but was replaced by Hoffman after FAU scored an unearned run and had the bases loaded. Hoffman retired three in a row en route to her 25th win of the year.
Guthrie made the final score 7-3 when she blasted her second home run in as many games over the left field fence. The home run marked Guthrie's 71st hit of the season, ranking fourth on the OSU all-time single season chart.
Iapala went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Adams was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Beavers. Senior Clare Burnum singled to extend her hitting streak to four tournament games.
Oregon State improved to 14-1 on the season when hitting two or more home runs in a single game and raised its school record total of homers to 59 on the year.
Corvallis native, Candice Freel (19-14), had six strikeouts for Florida Atlantic.
