Bannister Shows Complete Effort For Trojans In 9-1 Win Against Washington State

LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Brian Bannister threw a complete-game four-hitter Sunday and the USC Trojans registered the Pac-10 Conference series win with a 9-1 victory against the Washington State Cougars at Dedeaux Field.
Bannister allowed only one run, one walk and struck out a career-high eight batters for the Trojans' second complete game of the season.
USC (28-24, 11-10) took the lead for good in the second on senior Anthony Lunetta's two-run homer to right. Michael Moon added a two-run double, followed by a sacrifice fly by Lunetta and RBI single by Joey Metropoulos for a four-run fourth for the Trojans. Metropoulos went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
James Freeman (0-1) took the loss for Washington State (18-35, 6-15). Jay Miller went 3-for-3 for the Cougars and finished the series by going 8-for-13.
USC travels to Fresno State on Tuesday (May 20) for a 6 p.m. game before concluding the 2003 regular season at Washington for a key Pac-10 series, beginning on Friday (May 23) at 6:30 p.m. Game time is 1 p.m. for Saturday (May 24) and Sunday (May 25).
