Stanford To Meet California In NCAA Team Quarterfinals

NCAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINAL MATCH NOTES --- MAY 18, 2003
STANFORD (24-3) VS. CALIFORNIA (21-4)
ï¿½ Arch-rivals Stanford and California will meet in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championship on Sunday afternoon at the University of Georgia.
ï¿½ This is the third meeting between the two squads this season, with each team winning at home by a 4-3 margin ... California prevailed on Feb. 1 in Berkeley and the Cardinal was victorious on April 8 at Stanford ... In that second meeting, the match came down to No. 4 singles ... The Cardinal's Sam Warburg trailed Or Dekel 4-1 in the third set but rallied to win the final five games and post the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
ï¿½ Dating back to last season, the last four matches between the Cardinal and Golden Bears have been decided by 4-3 scores ... In addition to the two matches this season, both the Cardinal and Golden Bears pulled out 4-3 road victories during the 2001-02 campaign (Feb. 23 at Stanford; April 10 at California).
ï¿½ Since 1967 (the beginning of Dick Gould's tenure at Stanford), Stanford is 73-11 against California ... This will the fourth meeting between the arch-rivals in the NCAA Team Championship, but first since 1981 ... All three previous meetings have come at the University of Georgia ... The Cardinal has won all three matches: 5-1 in 1977, 5-3 in 1980 and 5-4 in 1981.
ï¿½ Stanford enters today's match will an all-time NCAA Team Championship record of 84-9 (.903) ... The Cardinal has won eight of its last 10 postseason matches dating back to 2001 and 32 of the last 35 going back to 1995.
ï¿½ Stanford's Carter Morris and Sam Warburg won 20 consecutive doubles games in the NCAA Team Championship before finally dropping one on Saturday against Tulane ... The Cardinal prevailed 8-0 against both Oral Roberts and Fresno State, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Tulane before eventually winning 8-1.
ï¿½ Freshman KC Corkery enters the quarterfinals with a 20-match singles winning streak dating all the way back to Feb. 14 ... Seventeen of those 20 wins have come in straight sets ... Corkery, who plays No. 3 singles led 7-5 over Tulane's Dmitriy Koch on Saturday night before the match was suspended.
ï¿½ Stanford has now advanced to the NCAA Team Quarterfinals in 14 of the last 16 seasons, and has won 11 national championships during that time.
ï¿½ Stanford has yet to drop a point through the first three rounds of the NCAA Team Championship ... The Cardinal has now recorded at least one NCAA shutout in each of the last 13 years.
