Dea Sumantri Advances To NCAA Singles Second Round

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Washington sophomore Dea Sumantri picked up a victory in her NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship first round match at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla., Monday, advancing to tomorrow's second round.
Sumantri, ranked 34th in the nation, upset 11th-ranked Alice Barnes of Stanford in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the opening round matchup. Sumantri moves on to face No. 30 Candice Fuchs from William & Mary in the Round of 32, Tuesday. Fuchs advanced with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 victory over Notre Dame's Caylan Leslie.
Sumantri's win today improved her overall record to 29-9, giving her sole possession of third place on UW's single-season victory list. A win in the second round tomorrow would make her the third player in Husky history to win at least 30 matches in a single season.
Sumantri is Washington's lone competitor in the individual portion of the NCAA Championships that continue through May 24.
