Gainesville, Fla. - Stanford freshman Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Texas A&M's Jessica Roland in the second round of the NCAA Women's Singles Tournament on Tuesday morning at the Ring Tennis Complex. Liu, seeded fifth in the event is one of 16 players left and advances to the third round.
Liu will meet Kentucky's Sarah Witten for the right to move on to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Witten defeated Sara Riske of Vanderbilt 6-3, 7-6(3) in her second round match.
Stanford's top doubles team and the No. 1 duo in the country of Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) cruised to a straight set victory over Virginia's Jennifer Tuchband and Henriette Williams.
'Coming out in the first round of a tournament sometimes it takes longer to get things going,' said Burdette. 'They were a tough team and they had a lot of tricky shots and played some good tennis. Once we got into a rhythm, we played pretty well. We had a little bit of a tough time closing it out but were able to regroup and get a break at 5-4 to close out the match.'
