Beavers Win Twice To Finish Baseball Season

May 21, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - On his final day in an Oregon State uniform, Andy Jarvis broke the school record for hits in a career and tied the record for home runs in a career as the Beavers took a pair of wins over Portland in non-league baseball Wednesday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. In the completion of a game suspended due to rain April 1 in Portland, OSU won 18-6; the Beavers (25-28 overall, 7-17 Pacific-10) then followed that with a 4-3 win over the Pilots (9-45-1, 5-24-1 West Coast) in the final game of the season for both teams.

In addition, Seth Pietsch broke the OSU record for total bases in a season and Tony Calderon tied the record for doubles in a season.

Jarvis, a senior first baseman, tied the mark for both hits and homers when he drove a ball over the rightfield fence in the eighth inning of the first game. He set the record for hits came in the seventh inning of the second game, when he flared a ball into short right field for a single.

'I just wanted the ball to get over the second baseman more than anything I've ever wanted,' Jarvis said. 'I think I was blowing hard enough to get it over him.'

That was the 232nd hit of Jarvis' career, breaking the record set by Brian Barden from 2000-02.

'Right after I hit it, Ben (McGrew, a former OSU teammate) called Brian on his cellphone to tell him,' Jarvis said. 'He probably called me a name. Ben was just laughing about it.'

Jarvis' homer tied the record of 34 set by Joe Gerber from 1997-2000, and that also gave him a share of the hits record after he'd gone 1-for-13 in the previous three games.

'Those were probably the two hardest hits I've ever tried to get in my life,' Jarvis said. 'For the last two weeks, I haven't been hitting the way I've been accustomed to this year. The home run - when I hit that, it felt like the biggest, fattest monkey ever had been lifted off my back. It felt so good.'

Jarvis also leaves OSU with the Beavers' career records for runs batted in, total bases and at-bats.

'It's been a great time, that's for sure,' Jarvis said. 'This team is a great bunch of guys. I'd never go back and say it was a bad year because everybody on this team is awesome - they're great people. You look back and if it boils down to one thing, what you remember is the guy you played with and the experiences you had with them.'

Added OSU head coach Pat Casey: 'It was great to see him do that. It was geat to get a couple of wins on the final day, and to see Andy and Chris (Biles) go out with base knocks.'

Biles, a senior who is Oregon State's recordholder for career doubles and on the top-10 lists for career hits, runs, RBIs, at-bats and total bases, had a pinch-hit single in his final at-bat.

Pietsch had three hits in the first game and a homer in the second game, giving him 133 total bases for the season. That broke the record of 128 set by Gerber in 1999. Calderon doubled twice in the first game to give him 24 two-base hits on the season, tying the school record Pietsch set in 2002.

The suspended game had OSU leading 3-1 going into the fourth inning when play resumed. The Beavers broke the game open in the sixth inning when Aaron Mathews' three-run homer made it 7-1.

Jacoby Ellsbury's two-run homer - his seventh of the season - made it 9-1 in the seventh inning. Jarvis' record-tying homer - also his seventh of the year - highlighted OSU's six-run eighth inning.

Jake Postlewait, the Beavers' pitcher when play was halted on April 1, earned the win and finished the season with a 5-1 record. Kenny Anderson allowed just two runs on six hits in five innings of relief, striking out four.

Mathews came off the bench to drive in five runs in the game, while Ellsbury was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and four runs and Pietsch was 3-for-5. Calderon was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles nd Paul Richie was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

In the second game, Oregon State pitchers Ben Rowe, Ty Kline, Noel Clark and Andy Baldwin combined on a six-hitter as the Beavers held off the Pilots, who pushed across single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Rowe went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five to improve to 4-7 this spring. Baldwin earned the save, getting the final out of the eighth inning with the tying run on base and then pitching a scoreless ninth.

Brad Mellinger was 2-for-3 with a double in the second game and Richie was 2-for-4 for OSU.

The Beavers took the lead for good at 2-1 in the third inning on Pietsch's sacrifice fly; he added a solo homer in he fifth inning that blasted through the trees forming the hitting backdrop beyond the centerfield fence.
