Hanlin, Vlaski Win Opening Round Matches At NCAA Singles Championship

ATHENS, Ga. - Washington men's tennis players Matt Hanlin and Alex Vlaski both picked up wins in their opening round matches Wednesday, advancing to tomorrow's second round of the 2003 NCAA Singles Championship hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Hanlin, ranked 28th, came back from a 5-3 deficit in the third set to win the tiebreaker, 7-6, defeating Virginia Tech's Andreas Lauland. Hanlin took the first set 6-2, only to have Lauland rebound with a 6-1 second-set victory. The Husky senior will now face fourth-ranked Bo Hodge, from Georgia in the second round Thursday. Hodge won his first round match over Jean Simon from Texas, 6-4, 6-1.

Vlaski, ranked 10th, defeated 35th-ranked Michael Yani from Duke in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. The Husky sophomore found himself down set point in the first set, and pulled out the tiebreaker, 7-6. He weathered a slight rain delay in the second set and held on for the 6-4 win. Vlaski will face a familiar opponent in the second round in UCLA's Marcin Matkowski, Thursday. Vlaski is 0-2 against 24th-ranked Matkowski this season, including a 6-4, 6-2 loss in the Pac-10 Championship Singles Final.
