GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Cal junior Raquel Kops-Jones continued her march through the NCAA women's singles tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Julie Smekodub of Tulane Wednesday morning in Gainesville, Fla.
In addition, the tandem of Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano defeated Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain of Duke, 6-2, 6-1.
Kops-Jones, the tournament's No. 6 seed, next plays fourth-seeded Agata Cioroch of Georgia in the quarterfinals Thursday at 6 a.m. Pacific Time. She is 0-1 vs. Cioroch this year, falling, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round of the All-American Championships in Los Angeles on Oct. 11.
'I felt good,' Kops-Jones said after Wednesday match. 'I didn't have to create anything. If I could get one more ball back, eventually she'd miss. I didn't have to do anything special.'
Still remaining in Kops-Jones' half of the draw are No. 1 seed Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee and Maira Radu from Mississippi. The championship match is slated for Saturday at 8 a.m. PT and will be televised Sunday at 11 a.m. PT on ESPN2.
Kops-Jones is the first Cal player to reach the quarterfinals since Amanda Augustus in 1998. Only Lisa Albano, who was a finalist in 1991, has advanced further in school history.
In doubles, Kops-Jones and Fusano next face Georgia's Cioroch and Lori Grey, the tournament's No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. PT Thursday.
