May 22, 2003
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Courtney Nagle and Daria Panova lost their quarterfinal match at the NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla., 6-3, 6-2. Virginia Commonwealth's pair of Silvia Urickova and Barbora Zahnova, ranked No. 20 nationally, defeated the Duck pair, ranked No. 33, for the second time this season.
'They have absolutely nothing to hang their heads about,' Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. 'They should be very proud of what they accomplished this year.'
The Rams pulled away late in the first set, then used the momentum to take over in the second set. Urickova and Zahnova won the final three games of the match to move into the semifinals.
'The other team played really well' Schyllander said. 'They didn't make any mistakes. We for sure had our chances, but we weren't as aggressive as we needed to be at times.'
Nagle, a junior, and Panova, a sophomore, earned All-America status by advancing to the quarterfinals at the tournament. They defeated the No. 7-ranked team in the first round, then knocked off the No. 17-ranked team from host school Florida.
