May 22, 2003

Gainesville, Fla. - Senior Christina Fusano and junior Raquel Kops-Jones continued their doubles success this afternoon, May 22 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Georgia's #2 Agata Cioroch and Lori Grey to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Ring Tennis Complex at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Fusano and Kops-Jones, one of the tournament's 5-8 seeds, will next face Silvia Urickova and Barbora Zahnova of Virginia Commonwealth at 9:00 a.m. (PST) Friday, May 23 for the chance to play in the doubles championship Saturday, May 23 following the 8:00 a.m. (PST) singles championship.

The other doubles semifinalists are Kentucky's tandem of Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen (#5-8) and Florida's Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes (#5-8).

'We were able to get the ball low again and take over the net,' said Kops-Jones on her doubles match performance. 'We had lots of movement, too,'

'We just used our lobs and played to the middle,' said Fusano. 'We played smart against them. They are a good team, and Agata (Cioroch) has a good serve. We allowed points here and there and scrambled to get them back.'

Fusano and Kops-Jones look to be Cal's first doubles tandem to reach the finals since currant assistant coach Amy Jensen and Clarie Curran won the title in 2000.

In her singles quarterfinal match, Kops-Jones lost a hard fought match to Georgia's Cioroch, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2.

'I think I played good in the first two sets, but I just ran out of gas the last set,' said Kops-Jones after her singles match. 'She kept me moving the entire time. She would hit hard and kept me at the baseline, and later on she would hit softer and I would have to move up closer to the net. She kept me off balance.'
