May 22, 2003

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 2 California is in 13th place Thursday after 54-holes of the NCAA Championships at Kampen Golf Course. The Golden Bears carded a plus-16 304 today for a total score of 936 with the final round slated for Friday. Cal is on pace to place the best it ever has in three appearances at NCAAs, with the previous top showing being 15th in 2002.

No. 3 USC has led the 24-team tournament after each round. The Trojans are at plus-37 901 after recording a plus-5 293 in the third round and take a seven-shot lead over No. 4 Pepperdine into the final round. No. 8 Oklahoma State is third at 912, and No. 5 Texas is fourth at 917 following its score of 290, the low round of the championship.

Nationals haven't gone according to plan for Cal, which entered the competition with a collegiate-best seven tournament titles to its credit. The Bears have lowered their team score in each of the first three days of the NCAA Championships, going from a 321 to a 311 to a 304.

Senior Ria Quiazon, who is co-captain with Laing, turned in Cal's next best performance with a 75. Quiazon also is the team's second-best golfer, tying for 48th at 233. Freshman Sophia Sheridan was minus-one through 11 holes with a birdie on the first hole and 10 pars, but she struggled over the final seven holes and finished at plus-seven on the day and is in a tie for 60th place (235). Cal's other counting score on the day came from junior Sarah Huarte, who shot a 78.

Mikaela Parmlid of USC and Andrea Vander Lende of Florida moved into a first-place tie at plus-four 220, while yesterday's leader, Annie Thurman of Oklahoma State, dropped to third at 221. Vander Lende's 69 today was the low round of the tournament.
