Women's Basketball Adds Two More to Recruiting Class
May 22, 2003
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team signed two more players to national letters of intent.
Cicely Oaks, a 5-foot-7 guard at Grant High School in Portland, Ore., and Eleanor Haring, a 6-foot-1 forward from Mullaloo, West Australia, will join the Ducks for the 2003-04 season.
Oaks averaged 23 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists for Grant last season. A three-year letterwinner for the Generals, she helped lead her team to the state tournament during her freshman and sophomore seasons. Representing the state of Oregon against a Washington all-star group in April, she led her team with 16 points. She also was picked KATU-TV's 'Athlete of the Month' for March.
'I'm very proud and excited to have Cicely become an official Duck,' third-year coach Bev Smith said. 'As an Oregon product, we feel that she will be an important contributing member to our women's basketball team. She has great athleticism and enthusiasm for the game, and will be a great addition to our team.'
Meanwhile, Haring competed on the Australian national junior team and attended the Australian Institute of Sport. She will be the fifth Australian native to play for the Ducks since 1997, the most recent being Natasha (O'Brien) Ruckwardt in 1999.
'Eleanor is a product of the Australian Institute and is a very talented basketball player,' Smith said. 'At 6-foot-1, she has the size, skills, athleticism, and playing experience to enhance our Oregon program. Eleanor's addition is a back-to-the-future step to an exciting Australian connection once again here at Oregon.'
Oaks and Haring complete a talented five-member recruiting class which also includes 6-foot-6 center Jessica Shetters (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS), 5-foot-10 guard Ashley Allen (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West) and 5-foot-10 guard Kaela Chapdelaine (Okotoks, Alberta/Foothills Composite).
