Erica Blasberg Cards Second Subpar Round to Finish Third at NCAA Championships
May 23, 2003
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - UA freshman Erica Blasberg notched her second consecutive subpar round Friday at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, moving herself into a third-place finish at 10-over-par 298. Her performance helped the Wildcats to match the best team round of the championships with a 2-over-par 290 and finish in seventh place.
By shooting 290 as a team on Friday, Arizona finished at 1,217 (+65) which left them 20 strokes behind Southern California, winner of the weather-plagued 2003 championships. The Women of Troy claimed the national championship as a final-round 296 put them at 45-over par after 72 holes. Pepperdine finished in the runner-up position with a four-day total of 1,212 (+60), while Texas took third at 61-over-par 1,213. The Ohio State Buckeyes took fourth at 1,214 (+62). Arizona was one shot away from earning a top-five finish as UCLA and Oklahoma State tied for fifth place at 1,216 (+64).
Arizona's final-round score at Purdue University's Kampen Golf Course equaled the best team score of the week and moved it up three places from 10th place. The Wildcats' posted the best two-round total over the final 36 holes of the tournament.
'If only there were a fifth round,' said head coach Greg Allen, jokingly. 'The girls really stepped it up on the final two days, but we were unable to overcome the awful start and the bad weather. I'm still proud of these golfers though for their perseverance.'
USC's Mikaela Parmlid and Florida's Andrea Vander Lende both completed play at 9-over-par 297, but Parmlid earned medalist honors after she bested Vander Lende on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Blasberg finished one shot behind the duo of Parmlid and Vander Lende.
Friday saw Blasberg become the only woman in the championships to post two subpar rounds and only the second competitor to shoot a round in the 60s as she carded a final-round 69 (-3). Only 13 golfers in the field of 126 shot a round below the par of 72. Blasberg, a freshman from Corona, Calif., tallied four birdies Friday. She concludes her inaugural campaign as a Wildcat with two victories and nine consecutive top-10 finishes in only 10 events.
Sophomore Miriam Kraschinski displayed the form that enabled her to win the season-opening NCAA Fall Preview at the same Kampen Golf Course as she totaled a final-round 71 Friday. That left her at 26-over-par 314 and tied for 73rd place.
The senior tandem of Anne Lee and Laura Myerscough closed their collegiate careers Friday as Lee took 40th place, while Myerscough shared 47th. Lee, from Northridge, Calif., shot 3-over-par 75 in the final round and closed the event at 307 (+19). Myerscough, from Charleston, Ill., totaled 5-over-par 77 to finish at 308 (+20).
The final member of the Arizona lineup, freshman Cassandra Kirkland, took 55th place at 22-over-par 310. The French native completed her first appearance at the NCAA Championships with a 3-over-par 75.
Arizona's seventh-place finish marks its eighth consecutive top-10 placing at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. With Blasberg taking third place, an Arizona Wildcat has now finished in the top three for four straight years and the top 10 for eight consecutive years.
Purdue University hosted the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf Championships at Kampen Golf Course, part of its Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Kampen Golf Course is a par-72, 6,225 yard layout.
