Bruins Advance to National Semifinals With Win Over Washington
May 24, 2003
OKLAHOMA CITY - The third home run in as many games by Tairia Mims powered UCLA over Washington on Saturday night at the Women's College World Series. UCLA advances to play Texas at 12:30 pm PT in a game that will be televised live by ESPN. Washington is eliminated with the loss.
Washington's Amy Minor tied the game on a one-out solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, but UCLA's Keira Goerl bounced back quickly, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Bruins went quietly in the fourth and fifth innings, being retired in order. With one out in the sixth inning, Tairia Mims stepped to the plate and sent a full-count pitch from UW's Ashley Boek over the left field fence, her 22nd home run of the season and 61st of her Bruin career. Mims has hit one home run in each of UCLA's Women's College World Series games this season.
After the Mims home run, UCLA center fielder Stephanie Ramos made an outstanding catch in center field to rob Washington's Kristen Rivera of a hit. After an infield single by Kathy Fiske, Tracy Tawney came in to pinch-run, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground-out by Dena Tyson. Aimee Minor drew a full-count walk to give the Huskies runners at the corners before Sarah Hyatt popped out to end the game.
Goerl recorded seven strikeouts in the game, scattering four hits for her 37th victory of the season.
UCLA will return to action against third-seeded Texas at 12:30 pm Pacific Time. The Bruins must defeat the Longhorns twice in order to advance to Monday's Championship Game.
