Men's Golf Slips to 15th Place at NCAA Championships
May 29, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Ricky Barnes emerged as the University of Arizona's lone bright spot at the 2003 NCAA Championships as the team slipped to 15th place after Thursday's third round in Stillwater, Okla.
Arizona posted a 15-over-par 303 total in the third round and currently stands in a three-way tie for 15th place. Scoring continues to prove difficult, as just one team, Clemson University, has managed to card an under-par team total through three rounds. Arizona's 54-hole tally of 918 (+54) puts the team 30 strokes behind third-round leader Clemson. Tournament-host Oklahoma State, one stroke behind, is the only other team within 10 strokes of the lead.
Individually, Barnes became the first and only Wildcat to break par, registering a third-round 70 (-2). His three-round total of 219 (+3) puts him in a tie for seventh place, just two strokes out of second place. Barnes, who is seeking his fourth consecutive top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships, collected four birdies in Thursday's round and moved up eight places on the leaderboard. Auburn's Lee Williams continues to lead the 156-man field by five shots with a 212 (-4) total.
Junior Chris Nallen is the only other Wildcat player currently in the top half of the field. The Blairstown, N.J., native shot a three-over 75 and is tied for 40th place at 228 (+12). Only one other time in the last two years has Nallen been over par in three rounds of a tournament, Oct. 7-8, 2002, at the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview at the same Karsten Creek Golf Course.
Senior Brian Woolf, who is making his first NCAA Championship appearance, carded a six-over 78 and stands tied for 85th at 234 (+18). Also competing for the Wildcats was senior Andrew Medley, who is tied for 103rd place at 237 (+21), and senior Reid Hatley, who tallied an 83 (+11) and is 27 shots over par in two rounds after withdrawing from Tuesday's opening round due to illness.
The 72-hole 2003 NCAA Men's Golf Championships concludes Friday at Karsten Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 7,095-yard layout.
