Track & Field Finishes Strong at NCAA West Regional

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at the first-ever NCAA West Regional at Stanford on Saturday, May 31. The Wildcat women finished ninth overall with 34 points, while the UA men were also ninth with 32 points. UCLA won both the men's and women's titles.
The UA women's 4x100 meter relay team got things started for the Wildcats. The squad finished second in 45.12 seconds, earning a berth into the NCAA Championships in Sacramento next month. The team was made up of Sharifa Jones, Angel Perkins, Marquita Taylor and Seynabou Ndiaye.
After running a grueling 5,000 meters on Friday night, Beth Hoge entered the 1,500 meters final with the ninth-fastest time of the field. Hoge finished seventh overall in 4:30.84.
In a strong 110 meter hurdles field, Jeff Hunter clocked a 13.96 to finish fourth and earn a spot in the NCAA Championships. Hunter was eighth seventh in the 400 meter hurdles. In the women's 400 meters final, Angel Perkins finished seventh in 54.17 seconds.
Seynabou Ndiaye's strong push in the women's 100 meters final propelled her to a third-place finish in a personal best time of 11.57 seconds. Ndiaye will move on to the NCAA Championships with her top five finish.
Sean Shields came up with another strong second-place finish, this time in the shot put. Shields finished with a best throw of 63-5 ï¿½ (m), edging Vince Mosca of Arizona State by one half inch. The mark was his best throw of the outdoor season.
In the women's discus, Ilona Rutjes finished seventh with a throw of 171 feet, 3 inches (52.19m). Rutjes is expected to advance to the NCAA Championships based on previous performances.
In the first heat of the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Mark Anderson won in a time of 9:05.06. He finished 13th overall. Josh Ludwig was 12th in the second head and 12th overall, finishing in a time of 9:03.68.
The Wildcats rounded out the day with the 4x400 meter relay. On the women's side, Arizona fielded a squad of Sharifa Jones, Marquita Taylor, Chelsea Powell and Cocoa Sanford. The team finished 11th in a time of 3:45.41. The UA men's team was made up of Jeff Hunter, Matt Lea, Adrain Thomas and Jevon Mason. The Wildcat men finished sixth, clocking a 3:10.75.
The Wildcats will complete the season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Sacramento State University. The meet will take place June 11-15, 2003.
