June 2, 2003
EUGENE, Ore. -- Senior golfer John Ellis has been named to the Ping Pacific All-Region team, named by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Ellis, from San Jose, Calif., led Oregon to its first NCAA Championships appearance in four years with a 72.3 season stroke average. He had six top-10 finishes this year, including a tie for first at the Oregon Duck Invitational. He also finished second at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in the fall and at the spring's U.S. Intercollegiate.
The team captain was instrumental in helping Oregon reach the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., by placing 14th at the Pac-10 Championships and tying for 22nd at the NCAA West Regional.
The Pacific team also included 2003 NCAA Champion Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State and defending U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes of Arizona.
2003 marked the second straight year that a Duck was named to the Pacific All-Region team. Aaron Byers earned that honor in 2002.
