Josh Childress Selected As Finalist For U.S. Pan Am Games Team

Colorado Springs, Co - Stanford forward Josh Childress has been selected as one of the 17 finalists for the 12-man United States basketball team for the Pan American Games.

The 17 finalists will be whittled to 12 after training camp that begins July 21 in Orlando, Fl. The Pan Games are Aug. 2-6 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Childress, who led the Cardinal in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg) during the 2002-03 season, is one of three Pac-10 players to make the final list. The others are Ike Diogu of Arizona State and Luke Jackson of Oregon.

The Pan American Games, held every four years in the year prior to the Olympics and organized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), is a multi-sport competition open to men and women representing countries from North, South and Central America, and the Caribbean.

The USA men have earned a medal in 12 of their 13 Pan Am Games appearances, including a record eight golds, as well as three silvers and one bronze. The USA men settled for the silver medal in 1999.

Many USA Basketball athletes who have been selected to a Pan American Games team have gone on to compete in the Olympic Games, while many others have enjoyed professional careers. The list includes Ernie Grunfeld (father of Stanford forward Dan Grunfeld), Michael Jordan, Chris Mullin, Oscar Robertson, David Robinson, Isiah Thomas and Jerry West.
