June 4, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State All-Americans Elizabeth Jillson and Dennis Weathersby were among the student-athletes awarded Pacific-10 Conference Medals, which the league office announced Wednesday.
A Pac-10 Medal is awarded annually to each Pac-10 institution's outstanding male and female senior student-athlete based on a combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Jillson, a gymnast from Herald, Calif., was the Pac-10 co-champion on bars this season after scoring a 10.0 on the event at the conference meet in March. She was the fifth Beaver to win a Pac-10 title on the event and the fourth to score a 10.0 on the apparatus. A two-time All-Pac-10 Team selection, Jillson earned first team All-American honors on bars in 2002, placing 11th on the event at the NCAA Championships. She is majoring in liberal studies and was a three-time honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic Team pick. Jillson has served on OSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four years and was the chair of the Student-Athlete Welfare Committee last year.
Weathersby, a cornerback from Duarte, Calif., was named to several All-America teams throughout his career as a Beaver. A 2002 Jim Thorpe Award finalist, Weathersby was recently drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals with the first pick of the fourth round. He holds the OSU record for career pass breakups and was selected to the All-Pac-10 Team all four years of his career. A liberal studies major, Weathersby was also a four-time first team Pac-10 All-Academic honoree, and he was named to the Verizon Academic All-District Team three times.
The Conference Medals winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 luncheon, held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament next March.
