Rowing Advances To NCAA Grand Final; Trojans Finish Sixth

June 1, 2003

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The USC Varsity Eight Crew returned to the grand finals at the 2003 NCAA Championships held at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind., this weekend (May 30-June 1). The Women of Troy, who missed the final cut last season, placed third in Saturday's semifinal heat to qualify for Sunday's grand final.

All six finalists finished within two seconds of each other during the semifinal races and the grand final was expected to be a hotly contested battle. On Sunday, Washington burst out to take the early lead and USC followed closely behind for the opening 500 meters. The four remaining boats managed to catch up and all six boats ran deck-to-deck until Harvard took the lead near the halfway mark. The Crimson maintained control of the race the rest of the way.

The Trojans paced the other boats for most of the race, but eventually fell behind by a boat's length in the final 500 meters. USC completed the race in 6:38.33, seven seconds behind fifth-place Virginia (6:31.49). Harvard captured the title in 6:26.92, followed by Michigan (6:28.58), Stanford (6:29.54) and Washington (6:30.07).

This marked USC's second-ever appearance in the NCAA Grand Final. The Trojans also advanced to the final race in 2001 and earned a program-best fourth-place finish that year.
