June 6, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer Chris Nallen was selected to represent the United States in the 2003 Palmer Cup presented by Monster, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Friday.
Nallen is one of eight collegiate standouts chosen to represent the U.S. in the annual Palmer Cup matches. The United States will host Europe, July 7-11 at The Kiawah Island Club's Cassique Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Having just completed his junior season, earned GCAA PING All-America honors for the third straight season after averaging 71.74 strokes per round in 2002-03. UA's top finisher in seven events this season, Nallen, who hails from Blairstown, N.J., posted nine top-10 finishes and led the team in appearances (15), rounds played (43), low tournament total, rounds at par or better (27) and rounds in the 60s (12). Thirty-eight of his 40 rounds played in team competition (95 percent) counted towards the team total.
A semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, Nallen was a first team all-Pac-10 selection for the second year in a row. His 11-under 205 total April 12 at the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational tied for eighth-best on Arizona's all-time scoring list in relation to par. He is the first Arizona golfer to participate in the Palmer Cup matches.
The Palmer Cup presented by Monster is a Ryder Cup-style event in which eight-man teams made up of collegians from both the United States and Europe compete against each other in both four-ball and singles-play formats. The United States leads the series, 4-1-1, and has won all three previous Palmer Cup matches played stateside.
